Fertiliser Handling

Overview

Fertiliser is chemically aggressive and physically abrasive at the same time. Spilled product attacks ordinary steel frames, and the dust that escapes from bagging settles on everything and corrodes it slowly. A conveyor specified as if it were handling ordinary bagged goods will not last.

Handling is built for that: corrosion-resistant frames and finishes, sealed and protected drives, and belts sized for heavy filled bags that are dropped rather than placed. Because fertiliser bags are dense and often stacked straight onto pallets, the line is generally short, heavy-duty and built to be washed and maintained rather than run to failure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does fertiliser handling need special construction?

Because fertiliser is both corrosive and abrasive. Spilled product and airborne dust attack ordinary painted steel over time, so frames need corrosion-resistant construction and drives need to be sealed against dust ingress. Equipment specified for general bagged goods tends to fail early in a fertiliser plant.

What handles heavy fertiliser bags?

Belt conveyors sized for the bag footprint and weight for the main runs, and chain driven rollers where loads are heaviest or where drive must not slip. Bags are usually dropped onto the conveyor rather than placed, so the belt support and frame are specified for impact as well as steady load.

Can the same line handle different bag sizes?

Yes, provided the conveyor is sized on the largest and heaviest bag you handle. Belt width and roller pitch are set so that even the smallest bag is properly supported, while the frame and drive are rated for the heaviest.
